In celebration of the Nigerian Army Day (NADCEL) 2024, the Nigerian Army (NA) inaugurated several quick impact projects and conducted a free medical outreach in Plateau State on Wednesday, July 3, 2024.
These initiatives took place in Mangu, Riyom, Bassa, and Wase Local Government Areas (LGAs), highlighting the NA’s commitment to community development and Civil-Military Cooperation.
According to Director Army Public Relations Major General Onyema Nwachukwu at the commissioning ceremony in Mangu LGA, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, unveiled renovated classrooms, a solar-powered borehole, and new toilet facilities at Mangun.
This project was initiated by Major General Godwin Mutkut, an illustrious son of the community and the General Officer Commanding 8 Division of the Nigerian Army.
General Lagbaja emphasized that these projects are part of the Army Headquarters’ efforts to give back to the communities of senior officers who have served meritoriously.
He urged the Mangun community to take full ownership of the facilities and use them for the benefit of all. He also called for community support in the Army’s efforts to eliminate criminal elements in Plateau State.
The COAS explained that the NA aims to foster Civil-Military Cooperation to build trust and enhance its operations and training activities.
He stated that the NA will continue to implement non-kinetic strategies, including impactful quick impact projects, to complement its kinetic efforts nationwide and win the hearts and minds of Nigerians.
General Lagbaja thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Minister of Defence, and the Chief of Defence Staff for their support and guidance.
He also expressed gratitude to the Governor of Plateau State, Barrister Caleb Manasseh Muftwang, for his assistance in the Army’s peacekeeping efforts in the state.
Major General Godwin Mutkut, representing the Mangun community, expressed gratitude to the NA for the projects, noting their positive impact on the community’s well-being.
He highlighted that the projects will provide an enhanced learning environment and contribute to the fight against insecurity by engaging young minds academically.

In Riyom LGA, the COAS commissioned additional classrooms and a solar-powered borehole at Hoss Community Secondary School in Ta-Hoss.
He noted that the choice of Ta-Hoss was due to its significant impact by farmer-herder conflicts, and the NA’s effort to help the community recover.
The new facilities aim to provide a conducive learning environment and promote healthy living, especially amidst reports of cholera in some parts of the country.
The Nigerian Army also conducted a free medical outreach at the University of Jos Main Campus Primary School in Angwan Rogo, Jos North, offering free medical services to residents.
The event included medical examinations, treatment for various ailments, and distribution of medications, eyeglasses, mosquito nets, crutches, and wheelchairs to physically challenged individuals.
Health talks and counselling sessions were also provided to educate the community on substance and drug abuse.
