Achievers University has uncovered an alleged N457.5 million tuition fraud involving a former bursary staff member, 11 current staff, six students, and 320 other students.
A recent Students’ Fees Payment Audit found that the students paid their fees into the personal bank account of a former female staff member instead of the university’s official account. The fraud covered the 2023/2024, 2024/2025, and 2025/2026 academic sessions.
Acting Vice-Chancellor Oyesoji Aremu said Monday that the ex-staffer, an alumna of the university’s Accounting Department, allegedly manipulated the payment portal to clear the students financially without the university receiving the money. She reportedly resigned in April 2025.
The university said the suspect persuaded students to pay into her private account by offering discounted fees and commission-based incentives. “The exercise revealed that 320 students paid a total of N457,508,645 into the personal account of the said former worker,” the statement read.
Six students allegedly acted as agents in the scheme, while 11 staff members are accused of aiding it.
All affected students will appear before the students’ disciplinary committee, and the implicated staff will face the senior staff disciplinary committee. The former employee is under police investigation ahead of possible prosecution.
The university said the audit will continue and will review tuition payments made by graduates from the last two sessions. It added that the governing council had approved the investigation to ensure transparency.
