The Orangun of Oke-Ila in Ifedayo Local Government Area of Osun State, Oba Adedokun Omoniyi Abolarin has called for adequate unity of leaders in the South West region in finding lasting solutions to the insecurity issue in Nigeria, especially in the region.
The traditional ruler, who was a key speaker at the second Annual Colloquium on “Yoruba And the World” organised by Global Affairs and Sustainable Development Institute (GASDI), Osun State University, Osogbo, expressed worry over the spate of insecurity in the southwest zone.
The Orangun of Oke Ila who called for dialogue among stakeholders, said it is time for Yoruba to bury their egos and put the issue of superiority behind, saying by so doing the issue of insecurity would be tackled headlong.
According to the monarch, insecurity have affected heavily in the nook and cranny of Yoruba land and that many measures deploy to curb them in the past failed completely
“Democratic tenet we must revive tolerance, we must be able to dialogue with ourselves. The idea of superiority should be scrapped. We should always have it at the back of our minds that no one is superior in Yoruba land. We are all equal.
” The principle of equality and we must engage the 1999 constitution as amended, there are important things in the constitution to achieve for the people in Yoruba land and for Nigeria at large
According to him: “One of the Yoruba illustrious son, Chief Sunday Igboho identified a great honor in the security architecture of Yorubaland which should also bother any right thinking person as well and stood up to fight fearlessness to defend his people from highly aggressive mandaras who turn themselves into pronounced militants on our land.”
While speaking on the coming general elections, the monarch advised Nigerians especially Yoruba people on the need for them to vote for competent and highly cerebral candidate.
While speaking, the Vice-Chancellor, Osun State University, (UNIOSUN), Professor Clement Adebooye said the university is doing everything possible within its reach to make a difference in the society, adding that part of their mandate is to make intervention in our community and all the issues surrounding the sustainable development goals.
While speaking on the usage of mother tongue to teach in the primary schools, Prof Adebooye said: “Using Yoruba to teach will help substantially, most of our children today can’t read Yoruba books, they don’t the meaning of accents, intonations of Yoruba people
“We have the ways of seeing things in Yoruba land ,there are things we don’t say but we gesticulate. We should going beyond introducing the languages to our educational curriculum we should go into practicality of the languages.”
