Troops of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) under Sector 4 in Diffa, Republic of Niger, have intercepted 174 unarmed Nigerian men attempting to cross into Niger border communities.

According to Chief Military Information Officer HQ MNJTF, N’Djamena, Chad Lieut. Col. Olaniyi Osoba, the interception occurred at Gueskeru, a key border town connecting Yobe State, Nigeria, and the Republic of Niger.

He said preliminary investigations indicated the men claimed they were travelling to the Lake Chad region for fishing activities.

However, the porous borders in this region have long been exploited by terrorist groups, including the Lakurawa group, known for atrocities against civilians in Nigerian-Niger border areas.

Osoba said given the security risks posed by such a large group of able-bodied men potentially accessing areas infiltrated by terrorists, MNJTF troops halted their journey and initiated comprehensive profiling and interrogation to determine their intentions and mitigate any threat to regional security.

The MNJTF reaffirmed its commitment to combating terrorism, protecting civilians, and safeguarding the region.

This operation highlighted the critical need for enhanced border security and continued cooperation among Troop Contributing Countries in the fight against cross-border terrorism.
