2 docked over alleged theft of street lights

Two men, Bello Azeez and Olawale Mojisola , on Tuesday appeared in a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly stealing five street lights, iron poles and armoured cables.

Bello, 25 and Olawale, 26, whose addresses were not provided, are facing a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, willful damage and stealing.

They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Prosecutor, Insp Courage Ekhueorohan, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on April 12 on Eric Moore Road, Surulere, with some others still at large.

Ekhueorohan said that the defendants stole items worth N1.5 million belonging to the Lagos State government.

He said that the duo willfully damaged poles and cables, belonging to the complainant.

Ekhueorohan said that the offences contravened Sections 287 (5) (a)(b)(c),, 340, 350 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates three years jail term for stealing, while Section 411 provides two years for conspiracy.

The Magistrate, Mrs O.O Otitoju, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N200, 000 each, with two sureties in like sum.

Otitoju ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed with evidence of tax payment to Lagos State Government.

She adjourned the case until May 14, for mention. (NAN)
