The Price of Purpose
The Scriptures call Jesus the “Bright and Morning Star” (Revelation 22:16). A star is a symbol of light, guidance, and hope. Describing Jesus as the Morning Star reminds us that He is the One who ushers in a new dawn, ending darkness and bringing the promise of a glorious future.
But here is a profound truth: no star emerges without a sacrifice. Before glory, there must be a price paid. Even Jesus, the Shining and Morning Star, entered His glory through the ultimate sacrifice of the Cross.
Gold does not shine when it is first dug from the earth—it is covered with dirt, dross, and impurities. To reveal its beauty and value, it must pass through intense fire. The fire purifies it, burns away the unwanted parts, and brings out its brilliance.
Likewise, God allows us to pass through the “fire” of trials, discipline, and sacrifice so that our actual value can emerge. “He knows the way that I take; when He has tested me, I shall come forth as gold” (Job 23:10).
Just as gold shines only after fire, no star shines without sacrifice.
“And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore, God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name” (Philippians 2:8-9).
Jesus became the eternal light of the world because He laid down His life for us. His shining was born from His sacrifice.
Stars in Scripture and the Price of Sacrifice
Joseph: God showed Joseph that he would be a star among his brothers (Genesis 37:9). But before that dream came true, he paid the price of betrayal, slavery, false accusation, and prison. His star only shone after years of endurance and faithfulness.
Esther: Esther rose as a star in her generation, saving her people from destruction. But it came at the price of courage and sacrifice. She declared: “If I perish, I perish” (Esther 4:16). Without her willingness to risk it all, her star would never have shone in history.
David: Anointed as king while still a shepherd boy, David’s star had to pass through years of trials, rejection, and running from Saul. His greatness stemmed from his endurance of the price of patience and faith.
Jesus: Above all, Christ is the perfect example. He said: “Unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain” (John 12:24). His sacrifice produced salvation and glory for all who believe.
Lessons for Us
1. No destiny without sacrifice: If you want your star to shine, you must be ready to deny yourself, carry your cross, and follow Christ (Luke 9:23).
2. Sacrifice births glory: Every achievement worth having requires discipline, prayer, obedience, and often tears. Your sacrifice today is the seed of your shining tomorrow.
3. Obedience is the greatest sacrifice: Just as Jesus obeyed even unto death, your obedience to God’s will is the key that unlocks your shining future. “Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat of rams” (1 Samuel 15:22).
Final Admonition
Beloved, Jesus is the Bright and Morning Star, and because He paid the greatest sacrifice, He now shines forever. If you desire to shine in your generation, embrace the path of sacrifice—sacrifice of prayer, holiness, humility, service, and obedience to God.
Remember: “Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament, and those who turn many to righteousness like the stars forever and ever” (Daniel 12:3).
You are called to shine, but your shining must be purchased through sacrifice. Just as no seed grows without being buried, no star emerges without a price.
