The importance of light cannot be overemphasized. From the very beginning, light was God’s first remedy to the chaos and emptiness of the earth. Genesis 1:2-3 tells us, “The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. Then God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light” (NLT). Before anything else, God addressed the issue of light. Without light, order could not be restored.

In Matthew 5:14-16, Jesus calls us the light of the world: “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father” (NLT). As believers, we are called to shine in a world that is full of darkness. This world is lost in chaos and disorder, but we are the ones God has chosen to bring His light into it.
The darkness of the world is not just a physical absence of light—it is spiritual. It represents sin, confusion, and everything that opposes God’s will. But as believers, we are bearers of God’s light, and it is our responsibility to shine brightly. We cannot afford to hide our light or let it dim. The life of Christ in you is what sustains the work of Christ through you. Your light is your life.
When Jesus talked about light, He wasn’t merely speaking of physical illumination but of spiritual radiance—our lives, influenced by the Word of God, become the light that others see. The Word of God is the only thing that can bring true light into our lives. Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path” (NLT). Without the Word of God, we are walking in darkness, but with it, our path is illuminated.
It’s important to recognize that when you become a vessel of light, the enemy is not far away. Just as an evil spirit, when cast out, lingers and looks for an opportunity to return (Luke 11:24-26), so too will darkness seek to return if we are not vigilant. The enemy waits for unguarded moments to re-enter our lives with even greater force. This is why we must be constantly filled with the light of God’s Word and live out the life of Christ in us.
We cannot afford to allow moments of carelessness to dim our light. The more we let the light of God shine through us, the less room there is for darkness to creep back in. Let the Word of God dwell in you richly, and let your light so shine before men that they will see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. This is our calling. This is our mission.
