The Ekiti State Police Command has opened an inquiry after a middle-aged man, identified only as Segun, was found dead by hanging behind his home in Ise-Ekiti, Ise/Orun Local Government Area.
Residents said the man reportedly attacked his elder daughter in the early hours of Sunday before taking his own life.
Neighbourhood sources said the girl believed to be about 12 years old was rushed to a nearby hospital and was responding to treatment.
A resident, Mr Patrick Abayomi, said that neighbours were drawn to the scene by commotion.
“People said they heard noises from the house early this morning and went to investigate. They later found the man dangling from a tree.
“They took the injured girl to hospital immediately.”
A source in the community suggested the assault was deliberate, but investigators have not confirmed a motive.
Local accounts that circulated online and in the community have yet to be verified by police.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Ekiti State, Superintendent Sunday Abutu, said the Commissioner of Police, Joseph Eribo, had ordered a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Mr Abutu said police would probe the matter and ascertain the facts before commenting further.
Residents said traditional rites were being arranged to remove the body from the tree while neighbours appealed for calm and prayed for the recovery of the injured child.
