● We stand by our story – Icheku
The Executive Chairman of Ikwuano LGA of Abia State, Mr Anthony Nwaubani, has sued the Executive Editor of Dailyledger.com.ng, Tony Icheku, and two others at Abia State High Court, Ikwuano Division, alleging false and defamatory publication in a news report entitled “Ikwuano LG Boss, Nwaubani Snubs Inquiries on Financial Impropriety, Poor Leadership Allegations”, authored by Icheku.
In a reaction to the suit number HC/Il/2026, which was served on him on Saturday, March 14, 2026, Icheku declared the that the suit was a welcome development.
“We have categorically confirmed that the sum of N19 million was siphoned from the coffers of Ikwuano LGA under the watch of Mr Nwaubani as the Executive Chairman; we are praying that the court as a temple of justice shall in the constitutional requirement of transparency and accountability help us all unveil the fine details of how this humongous amount was embezzled.”
In a statement of claims made by his lawyer, Mssrs Dominic Nwachukwu, dated March 12, 2026, Nwaubani demanded N2 billion being claims for general damages for defamation; N1 billion being claims for exemplary damages and the sum of N120 million for litigation costs, all totalling N3.10 billion.
Nwaubani further demanded that the court should grant a perpetual injunction restraining Icheku from publishing further defamatory statements against him, plus retraction of the story entitled ””Ikwuano LG Boss, Nwaubani Snubs Inquiries on Financial Impropriety, Poor Leadership Allegations” and a public apology.
He alleged that the words used in in the story entitled “Ikwuano LG Boss, Nwaubani Snubs Inquiries on Financial Impropriety, Poor Leadership Allegations” were false and defamatory.
Icheku, in a statement reacting to the development stated that he would be happy to meet Nwaubani in court, affirming that finally Ikwuano people would witness the beginning of transparency and accountability in the management of their resources. ”
‘As a citizen of Nigeria from Ikwuano, and journalist, all I have asked for is for Mr Anthony Nwaubani to be accountable to the people, but if he prefers that the Court offers him a cozy atmosphere to do so, I gladly accept to meet him in court’.’
