The Chairman of Badagry Local Government (LGA), Mr Babatunde Hunpe, on Thursday flagged off the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK) “Trees for Lagos” exercise.

Hunpe, while flagging off the exercise at the Badagry Local Government Secretariat, Ajara, said it began with the planting of 554 trees across strategic communities within the area.

He said the initiative, undertaken in collaboration with LASPARK, formed part of the Lagos State Government’s environmental sustainability agenda.

Hunpe described tree planting as a long-term investment in public health, ecological balance and the wellbeing of future generations.

According to him, urban greening remains a critical policy tool for addressing rising temperatures, erosion, flooding and the effects of rapid urbanisation.

“Beyond beautifying the environment, trees serve as natural carbon sinks, improve biodiversity, provide shade and reduce heat intensity.

“They also contribute significantly to environmental resilience in coastal communities such as Badagry,” he said.

Hunpe urged residents to embrace environmental stewardship by protecting planted trees and supporting initiatives aimed at creating a cleaner, greener and more sustainable Badagry.
