Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Mojisola Meranda, has reportedly resigned from office.
But she has countered the report in a swift riposte, saying it was not correct.
Meranda was elected into office 38 days ago following the impeachment and removal of the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa.
Obasa was outside the country when the majority of the members voted to remove him on corruption allegations.
Obasa had kicked against the process that culminated in his ouster. He claimed he was not given a fair hearing and that the allegations against him were not true.
Obasa had on his return to the country filed a lawsuit to challenge the process adopted to remove him from office, even as he claimed that he remained the speaker.
Meranda’s resignation was reported by BusinessDay newspaper.
Her resignation comes two days after members of the house passed a vote of confidence in her leadership.
The Lagos State Legislature has been embroiled in controversies since the impeachment and removal of Mudashiru Obasa.
■ Lagos Speaker denies resignation rumour
The speaker has swiftly debunked the rumours doing the rounds that she has resigned from her position.
The rumour, which circulated online on February 19, 2025, was dismissed by her Chief Press Secretary, Segun Ajiboye, who confirmed that Meranda remained in her office and at work as of the time of this publication.
A letter dated February 17, 2025, claiming her resignation had been widely shared, but it was later found to be unsigned and not officially released.
The news comes amid ongoing leadership issues within the Assembly, following the removal of the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa.
