Former Kano governor Rabiu Kwankwaso says northern leaders deliberately assessed potential allies before settling on Peter Obi as the most capable partner for the 2027 presidential campaign.
Speaking on Arise TV Monday, Kwankwaso said the decision followed talks among northern leaders on who could work honestly to move the country forward.
“I looked around together with our leadership in the north to say, okay, who do we think is capable? Who can come and work together with us honestly so that we can move this country? Along the line, we realised that Peter Obi is at the forefront of it. That’s why we all accepted to work together,” he said.

Kwankwaso, leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement and NNPP’s 2023 presidential candidate, recently joined the National Democratic Coalition alongside Obi after leaving the NNPP over internal disputes.
Obi, former Anambra governor and Labour Party candidate in 2023, drew strong youth and urban support but did not win. Kwankwaso dismissed talk of a power struggle between the two camps, saying the alliance was based on a shared goal to advance the country.
