Almost 11 years after former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan left office as Nigeria’s leader, Nigerians are still yearning for the return of the man whose administration carved a niche for itself with massive socio-economic development that placed the country on global scale as country to be reckoned with.
The name Jonathan rings bell in Nigerian homes and beyond as many remember the legacy of the man whose policies did not only make Nigeria’s economy the largest in Africa by overtaking South Africa but also usher in a period of national growth that gave Nigerian citizens a new lease of life that has become a point of reference.
The Otuoke, Bayelsa State-born university lecturer turned politician’s entrance into the Nigerian political scene is seen by many as a divine intervention from the Almighty God due to the prosperity recorded under his [Jonathan] administration.
In this vein, for most Nigerians there is no better time than now, to look out for the man with the divine ability as the nation struggles for survival amid the build-up to the 2027 presidential election.
Nigerians remember Jonathan more than ever before as economic hardship and other woes bedeviling the country push many to the brink. But hope for a better tomorrow is not farfetched as citizens foresee a possible return of the messiah through a national call for the man
Jonathan’s leadership credentials as a leader capable of taking Nigeria out of the woods is not in doubt. For most Nigerians the return of this quintessential statesman is more than ever before a call to rescue Nigeria as the nation further sinks into a state of uncertainty.
The current leadership of Nigeria is to say the least incapable of surmounting the barrages of challenges facing the nation.
Hence, call for return of the messiah at this material time is inevitable, especially judging from the fact that after serving out his tenure in 2015, Jonathan remained committed to Nigeria’s aspirations by making himself available and offering support at various foras in the quest for a better Nigeria.
As a testament of Jonathan’s leadership prowess in July 2025, he was appointed as the United Nations Global Crisis Envoy. The first African former Head of State to hold this responsibility.
As a man locally and internationally acclaimed as a leader with conscience, his appointment was supported by world powers, including the U.S., UK, France, China, and Russia.
The recognition underscores Jonathan’s democratic credentials, particularly the peaceful transfer of power in 2015, to the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate now deceased ex-President Muhammad Buhari as well as the mediation efforts through the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation and the West African Elders Forum (WAEF).
Other laurels for Jonathan includes: his nominated for the 2025 Founders Sunhak Peace Award, becoming the first African leader to win this category of the honour.
Besides, in 2022, he was appointed to the International Advisory Board of the European Corporate Council on Africa and the Middle East (ECAM Council), again, becoming the first sub-Saharan African leader on the board.
Jonathan as an astute democrat has led various election observation missions for the Commonwealth and African Union among other international outings.
Many believed that the former president was hounded out of office in a web of intrigues in very high places and not for poor performance
Now, his re-entry into the race to the Villa signals the return of the rejected stone with the high prospect of becoming the corner stone
Therefore, it is not out of place to say that Nigerians await the return of the messiah for a national rescue mission.
