The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has faulted the All Progressives Congress APC, for non-compliance with its (INEC’s) Regulations and Guidelines for Political Party Operations (2018).
The electoral body in a letter to the National chairman of the ruling APC dated March 9, 2022 and signed by the Secretary to the Commission, Rose Onaran-Anthony, pointed out that the party’s notification and invitation of the Commission to its National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting was not signed by both the national chairman and national secretary of the party’s Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee.
THE CONCLAVE reports the Commission to have stated that this amounted to non-compliance with the provision of Article 1.1.3 of the Commission’s Regulations and Guidelines for Political Party Operations (2018).
The Commission also reminded the APC of the provision in Section 82(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, which requires “at least 21 days” notice if any convention, Congress or conference or meeting convened for the purpose of “merger” and electing of members of its executive committees, other governing bodies or nominating candidates for any elective offices.”
The INEC expressed hope that the APC would note the issues stated supra for compliance, apparently suggesting that the party might have acted in breach of the legal provisions with regard to them.
