The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, has warned staff members of the nation’s elections management body to shape up or ship out ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Amupitan emphasised that excellence was not optional but mandatory.

He spoke during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

He stressed that the expectations of Nigerians were high, especially with the upcoming governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states, and ultimately the 2027 general election.

Amupitan also addressed discrepancies in the FCT Area Council election, explaining that voter migration was done in 2022, not under his watch.

Amupitan directed RECs to intensify voter education and sensitisation in their respective states.

He encouraged citizens to verify their polling unit details using INEC’s online Polling Unit Locator.

Amupitan commended security agencies for maintaining peace during the FCT election, but noted incidents of violence in Kuje and Kwali Area Councils.

He said INEC was open to collaboration with FOSIECON to ensure credible elections in Local Government Areas.
