A 70-foot statue of Lionel Messi in Kolkata will be taken down after engineers flagged safety risks and said the structure sways in strong winds.
The monument was installed in December as part of Messi’s “GOAT tour” of India. Residents raised complaints earlier this week, prompting an inspection by the Public Works Department.
West Bengal legislator Sharadwat Mukherjee confirmed that the inspection found the installation unsafe.
Authorities say the statue will be removed to prevent any danger to the public.
The tribute was meant to honour the Argentine football star following his World Cup success.
