The Nigeria Police Force has debunked a widely circulated false report alleging that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun instructed citizens to assault officers or hurl stones at them during stop-and-search operations.
In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police clarified that the claim is baseless and untrue.
The IGP has never issued such directives.
Instead, he urged citizens to report instances of police misconduct through established channels, emphasizing accountability and adherence to the rule of law over acts of violence.
“The public is encouraged to use the following helplines for complaints: +2347056792065, +2349133333785, +2349133333786. Reports can also be made via social media (@PoliceNG on X, @ngpolice on Facebook, and @nigeriapoliceforce on Instagram), email at pressforabuja@police.gov.ng, or the police website at npf.gov.ng.
“Citizens are advised to remain alert to misinformation and verify news from credible sources.
“The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to fostering trust and cooperation with the communities it serves,” he said.
