In a significant security operation on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) LUGARD successfully intercepted and apprehended a suspect accused of stealing a Dangote truck carrying 900 bags of 50kg cement.
The truck, which was on its way to Jalingo, Taraba State, from Obajana, Kogi State, was seized during the operation.
The swift action was part of ongoing efforts by the Nigerian Navy to combat crimes related to theft and illegal activities on Nigeria’s highways.
The Dangote truck, owned by Dangote Cement PLC, one of Africa’s largest industrial conglomerates, had been reported missing, leading to a rapid response from the authorities.
The Navy personnel acted on intelligence reports that indicated the truck’s movement had deviated from its intended route.
Upon interception, the suspect was taken into custody, and the truck was secured.
The arrest took place without any reported resistance, ensuring that the valuable cargo remained intact.
Following the successful operation, the suspect and the recovered truck were promptly handed over to the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Lokoja Command, for further investigation.

The police are expected to conduct a thorough inquiry into the incident to determine the suspect’s involvement and whether any additional individuals or criminal syndicates were connected to the theft.
The Nigerian Navy, which is primarily tasked with safeguarding the country’s maritime borders, has been increasingly involved in assisting with internal security matters in collaboration with other security agencies, especially in cases of organized crime.
This particular arrest highlights the Navy’s versatility in tackling both maritime and land-based crimes.
The apprehension of the suspect is seen as a win in the broader fight against theft and economic sabotage, as incidents involving the hijacking or theft of trucks belonging to major companies can have a detrimental effect on the nation’s economy.
Dangote Cement trucks, which transport large volumes of building materials across the country, are crucial for the construction and infrastructure sectors.
Authorities have assured the public that justice will be pursued in this case and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening security measures to protect the country’s roadways and economic assets.
The Nigeria Police Force has urged citizens to report any suspicious activities that could lead to further arrests of individuals involved in such criminal activities.
As investigations continue, further details regarding the suspect’s motives and background are expected to be released in due course.
