Iconic Warri businessman answers the call to glory, by Godwin Igbinosa

The Warri business community is mourning the passing of one of its most distinguished entrepreneurs, a man whose life story reflected diligence, foresight and unwavering commitment to enterprise and community development.

His journey into commerce began in Benin City, where he worked as a travelling salesman along the bustling Forest Road. Those early years helped shape the resilience, discipline and business instincts that would later define his career.

In 1954 he relocated to Warri to join his elder brother, and a year later, in 1955, he took a decisive entrepreneurial step by establishing a gift shop that sold a wide range of merchandise. Built on a philosophy of integrity and customer satisfaction rather than aggressive profit seeking, the business quickly gained the trust and loyalty of customers.

Over the years, his enterprise expanded significantly. His company, SAMEMU Limited, became widely recognized across Warri, while Iyobosa House, one of his major business premises, became a familiar landmark in the city’s commercial environment.

With remarkable foresight, he later ventured into the petrochemical sector, establishing a large gas filling plant in Warri in 1980. The facility supplied gas to numerous homes and institutions across the region, including the College of Education, Abraka.

His leadership extended beyond his own businesses. In 1972 he joined the Warri Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (WACCIMA), where his dedication and influence eventually saw him rise to the position of Vice President in 1998.

Widely described as a born entrepreneur, venture capitalist and astute businessman, he was also known for his exceptional networking ability and his readiness to mentor and support others. His generosity and philanthropic spirit touched many lives within the Warri community.

Beyond commerce, he remained a respected figure in community and church affairs, offering leadership and guidance whenever called upon.

Blessed with longevity, he lived a full and impactful life, leaving behind a legacy built on hard work, integrity, faith and service to humanity.

Though he has answered the final call to glory, the legacy he leaves behind in business, family and community life will continue to inspire generations.

May his soul rest in peace.
