The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has dismissed the government’s claims of killing over 13,000 terrorists and arresting 17,000 others since President Bola Tinubu’s inauguration, labeling it “tissues of lies and propaganda”.
HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, argued that the government’s narrative was no longer believable due to the availability of provable evidence showing the presence of armed terrorists in several states, including Niger, Kwara, Borno, and Kebbi.
HURIWA cited recent attacks, including the abduction of 25 girls from a government girls’ boarding school in Kebbi State, the killing of a Brigadier General by ISWAP in Borno State, and the attack on soldiers mobilized to rescue the Kebbi schoolgirls.
HURIWA demanded verifiable evidence that the terrorists have been “degraded, decimated, and crushed” by the combined forces of the military, police, and armed vigilantes.
The group questioned the credibility of the government, citing the withdrawal of military troops from the government girls’ boarding school in Kebbi State before the terrorist attack, despite available intelligence on the planned attack.
US pressures Nigeria to act on insecurity
HURIWA called on President Tinubu to resign if he cannot protect schoolgirls and schoolchildren from terrorists.
The group emphasized the need for accountability and transparency in the government’s fight against terrorism.
