The organisers of the Bayelsa Governor’s Football Tournament, Nigeria’s leading grassroots football event known as the Prosperity Cup, have warmly congratulated Governor Douye Diri on his 66th birthday.

In a statement, Mr. Ono Akpe, Director General of the Prosperity Cup, described Governor Diri as a compassionate, humble, and dedicated leader whose transformative governance had significantly advanced Bayelsa State.

Akpe praised the governor’s impactful five-year tenure, marked by notable achievements in infrastructure, human capital development, and economic empowerment across key sectors, reshaping the state’s trajectory.

The statement highlighted Governor Diri’s role in fostering peace and stability, alongside his tireless service to Bayelsa and Nigeria.

His commitment to sports development has led to Bayelsa’s remarkable success in competitions like the National Sports Festival, Niger Delta Sports Festival, National Para Games, Nestle Milo Basketball Championship, and the 2021 AITEO Cup, where state-owned teams excelled in Benin City, Edo State.

Akpe also celebrated the recent triumphs of Bayelsa Queens in the Nigeria Women Premier Football League (NWFL) and the standout performance of Prosperity Cup 2023 alumna Precious Benjamin at the U-20 African Cup of Nations, underscoring the tournament’s growing influence and its contribution to women’s football in Bayelsa.

Governor Diri’s unwavering support for the Prosperity Cup, including increased prize money, has solidified its status as Nigeria’s premier grassroots football tournament, positively impacting the state’s youth.

“Your ‘ASSURED Mantra’emphasizing infrastructure, sports, agriculture, education, healthcare, and inclusive governance—has propelled Bayelsa forward, establishing you as a beacon of progress.
