Google has officially renamed Lake Ontario to “Lake America” on its maps for users in the United States, following an announcement by President Donald Trump to rebrand the Great Lake.
The change went live on Sunday across Google Maps and Google Search for American IP addresses. Canadian users, however, still see “Lake Ontario” — the name rooted in Indigenous language and used for more than 400 years.
A Google spokesperson defended the split display, saying the company is “reflecting official US designations while preserving local naming conventions in other regions.”

The renaming is the latest salvo in Trump’s “America First” agenda and lands amid an escalating trade war with Canada.
Washington and Ottawa have traded new tariffs in recent weeks, deepening a rift between the two neighbors.
Canadian officials slammed the move.
“This is absolutely backwards,” one senior official said, calling it “a political stunt that erases shared history and geography for cheap headlines.”

Google’s decision puts it at odds with rivals. As of Sunday morning, Apple Maps showed no trace of “Lake America.” The name Lake Ontario remained unchanged for all users on iPhone.
Lake Ontario is one of the five Great Lakes and straddles the US-Canada border between New York State and the province of Ontario.
The word “Ontario” comes from an Indigenous term meaning “great lake” or “beautiful water.”

The Lake Ontario rebrand follows similar Trump administration orders earlier this year to rename mountains, gulfs and other landmarks on US federal maps.
Critics say the push is less about geography and more about symbolism — an effort to project nationalist identity during a period of trade disputes and diplomatic strain.
For now, one body of water, two names.
Americans will see “Lake America.”
Canadians will still see “Lake Ontario.”
