Former Governor of Akwa Ibom state, Obong Victor Attah, has urged journalists to shun material gains and abide by the ethics of the journalism profession.

Attah stated that Nigerian journalists had done well for the profession.

Attah stated this during the lecture and book presentation of NaijaTimes, with the theme, “Journalism in the Service of the Society.”

The event held at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja.

He said that the book was about a better society.

According to him, “Even though the Nigerian Union of Journalists is perfect, it can still be a more perfect union.:

He addes: “In Nigeria we have been far from perfect; the society needs to improve, and it is only the journalists that can do that. They can do it by telling the people the things going wrong; they are to give the society warning signals, and this should not be interfered with by the society.

“Nigerian journalists have suffered; they have tried, they have done well, but some of you have sold out; let us be honest with ourselves. With the way they sing praises of people, some journalists are worst than politicians.”

The publisher and Editor-in-chief of Naija Timrs, Ehi Braimah said his major concern was making Nigeria a better place.

He said this was the motivation for setting up NaijaTimes, which according yo him, rested on three main pillars, to wit: building strong institutions, respect for the rule of law and defending the public interest.

“The elite conspiracy against Nigeria at all levels is a mortal sin and the major achievement of these enemies of Nigeria is that they have turned Nigeria into a huge crime scene.

“Perherps sociologists can explain why primitive accumulation of wealth is seen as a contest for misbegotten medal,” he stated.

Braimah said “instead of protecting tribes and where we come from, we should embrace national ethos to achieve one objective of a United Nigeria.

“The starting point is to think Nigeria first, in everything that we do; it is a campaign we intend to launch under the auspices of the NaijaTimes journalism foundation.”
