The Federal Government of Nigeria has strongly refuted allegations made by US President Donald Trump regarding widespread killings of Christians in the country.
Trump’s claims led him to designate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern,” sparking controversy and diplomatic tensions between the two nations.
In a statement released on Saturday, November 1, 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasised that Trump’s remarks did not accurately reflect the situation on the ground.
The spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, highlighted Nigeria’s longstanding tradition of peaceful coexistence among people of different faiths.
The designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” is the highest level of concern under the US International Religious Freedom Act, reserved for countries that engage in or tolerate systematic, ongoing, and egregious violations of religious freedom.
This move has significant implications for Nigeria’s international relations and potential economic consequences.
