Justice Mohammed Nasir Yunusa of the Federal High Court, Kano Division, has died after collapsing at his residence.
Court officials said the judge slumped in his living room on Thursday evening and was rushed to a hospital, where he was confirmed dead on arrival. He was buried on Friday in accordance with Islamic rites.
The Director of Information for the Federal High Court of Nigeria, Catherine Oby Christopher, confirmed the death, saying Justice Yunusa passed away at a medical facility in Kano.
A source at the Federal High Court in Abuja described him as diligent and hardworking, noting that he handled several high-profile cases during his tenure.
Justice Yunusa was known for presiding over politically sensitive election-related matters after the 2023 general elections.
In one ruling, the Kano division declined to nullify the candidacy of Abia State Governor-elect Alex Otti, holding that the matter fell outside its jurisdiction. He also handled suits involving Labour Party candidates and the Independent National Electoral Commission arising from the 2023 polls.
In a related case, the court nullified the election of some Labour Party candidates in Kano while clarifying jurisdictional limits in cases involving candidates in other states.
One suit filed by Ibrahim Haruna-Ibrahim sought to revoke certificates of return issued to Labour Party candidates across Kano, the 36 states, and the FCT. The Labour Party and INEC were listed as respondents.
