The unfolding drama in the Equatorial Guinea’s sex scandal involving the Director-General of the National Financial Investigation Agency (NFIA), Baltasar Engonga has precipitated fatal consequences.

This followed the discovery and recovery of over 400 intimate videos allegedly recorded by Engonga, who was arrested and presently facing allegations of recording over 400 intimate encounters involving high-profile women, including wives and relatives of top government officials.

Engonga, 54, and head of the NFIA, was detained amid a fraud investigation that led officials of the agency to conduct an unplanned search of his residence and office, where they discovered numerous CDs containing footages of these encounters.

In the videos, Engonga was reportedly seen with figures such as his brother’s wife, the sister of the president, the wife of the police chief, and several ministers’ wives.

The Engonga scandal quickly gained public attention, particularly after many of the videos surfaced online, triggering outrage.

A local media outlet ‘Ahora EG,’ reported that many of the recorded encounters appeared to have been consensual, even though some of the videos were captured within Engonga’s office, often with national symbols such as the Equatorial Guinean flag visible in the background.

Attorney General Nzang Nguema, commenting on the development, explained that consensual relations are not regarded as a criminal offense under Equatorial Guinean law except force or coercion is involved but, expressed concern about the potential for health risks, including disease transmission.

Nguema therefore advised any affected individuals to report cases of coercion or assault.

Meanwhile, the Equatorial Guinea government has suspended Engonga and other officials found engaging in inappropriate activities within public offices.

In his own remarks, Vice President Nguema Mangue said the administration’s zero-tolerance stance on actions that tarnish public service integrity is key, stressing that officials must adhere to the highest standards of respect and ethics.

Now, with reports of a woman’s suicide circulating on social media, the scandal has taken a darker and more tragic turn, thereby raising more questions about the wider impact of the scandal on the individuals involved.

This heart-wrenching development casts a somber shadow over the situation, showing the emotional and social toll surrounding this unprecedented controversy in Equatorial Guinea.
