Humphrey Abah, a prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has added his voice to the growing call for real-time transmission of election results.
According to Abah, the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is a respected institution and should act in ways that promote the advancement of democracy and strengthen electoral processes in the country. He stressed that the Senate must always prioritize the integrity of the electoral system over narrow political interests.
Abah expressed concerns over how a few individuals seem to be manipulating the system for their own political gain, at the expense of the nation’s progress and the welfare of its citizens. He questioned why the country and its people were being subjected to such exploitation.
Each election cycle should serve as an opportunity for growth and improvement, particularly in areas such as preparation, security, public awareness, and trust in the electoral body. However, Abah noted that the legislative framework intended to uphold these values is often compromised by actions that only serve to benefit political parties and personal interests.
He emphasized that the future of Nigeria’s democracy rests in the hands of the people, who have the power to determine how they want elections to be conducted and, ultimately, who should lead them.
Abah also called on the government to be more attuned to the political rights and sensibilities of the people they claim to serve.
He criticized the Senate for attempting to undermine the success of future elections by hindering the real-time transmission of results. He pointed out that it was troubling to hear Senate President allude to network issues as a justification for not implementing this crucial system.
“If kidnappers can use mobile networks to send videos of their captives and demand ransoms, then why should a serious institution like the Senate claim it cannot transmit election results in real time?” Abah asked.
He urged the Senate to reconsider its stance on the matter and ensure that the transmission of results is done in real time, so the process remains credible and transparent.
Abah also cautioned the Senate against making excuses on behalf of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). If there are any legitimate concerns about the feasibility of real-time transmission, INEC itself should be the one to raise those issues, as it is within their mandate to address any operational challenges.
