The Edo State government has announced plans to deploy security personnel to prevent potential attacks on judges and lawyers during the continuation of a high-profile court case against the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo Oba Ewuare II.
The case, brought by two suspended dukes, Gregory Akenzua and Edomwonyi Iduozee Ogiegbaen, is scheduled for hearing at the Benin High Court on Sapele Road on Monday, July 15, 2024.
Back in May 9, 2024, a large show of support for the Oba took place on the court premises, involving palace chiefs, royal family members, priests, priestesses, and well-wishers.
On July 13, 2024, the Edo State Government issued a warning regarding a devious plot to disrupt the upcoming court proceedings.
Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Hon. Chris Nehikhare, emphasized that any attempts to incite public unrest or interfere with the judicial process would be met with lawful action.
“The Edo State Government condemns in the strongest terms the recent posts on social media inciting people to disrupt the operations of the Benin High Court on July 15. The rule of law must prevail, and all arms of government must operate without fear of intimidation or disruption,” said Nehikhare.
He further warned that unscrupulous politicians might be behind the plan to sponsor violence for political gain and urged the youth not to be used as instruments of disruption.
Parents were also advised to protect their children from exploitation by those aiming to disturb public peace.
The government reiterated its commitment to maintaining order, stating, “All lawful actions will be taken against individuals or groups involved in activities that undermine peace in the State.”
Law-abiding citizens were called upon to reject any calls for disruption and to support the government in preserving the peace and integrity of Edo State.
