In a tragic incident on Sunday, April 28, 2024, emergency rescue teams from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) faced harrowing challenges as they endeavored to save lives following a fatal crash along the Okene bypass on the Okene-Lokoja highway in Kogi State.

Corps Public Education Officer FRSC Headquarters, Abuja Assistant Corps Marshal Jonas Agwu, said the collision, which involved a Dangote Truck bearing registration details NSH680YJ and a Toyota Hiace Bus with registration number KMC455ZE, claimed the lives of 19 individuals.

Despite the valiant efforts of the FRSC emergency rescue teams, their endeavors were significantly hindered by an inferno engulfing the two vehicles.

“This tragic incident underscores the pressing need for heightened awareness and adherence to traffic regulations.”

Dauda Biu, the Corps Marshal, had previously addressed the media, emphasizing the imperative of moral and ethical consciousness among road users.

He warned against the perilous consequences of traffic violations, which all too often result in catastrophic collisions and subsequent loss of life.

Biu reiterated the FRSC’s unwavering commitment to prosecuting drivers whose negligent actions lead to road traffic crashes.

In the aftermath of the Okene tragedy, he reaffirmed the Corps’ resolve to pursue justice rigorously, calling upon the judiciary, transport unions, and other stakeholders to collaborate in restoring order and safety on the nation’s roads.

The crash investigation report attributed the collision to route violation, specifically ‘One Way’ infractions, and wrongful overtaking.

Tragically, the crash claimed the lives of 19 out of the 22 individuals involved, all of whom were male.

One individual sustained injuries, while two others, who adhered to traffic regulations by wearing seatbelts, escaped unscathed.

The deceased have been transported to Okene General Hospital, where their remains have been deposited pending further arrangements.
