Ekiti State is trading open grazing for modern ranching. The government has sealed a deal with Ekiti Kete Livestock Development Company Ltd. to build a 250-hectare cattle ranch in Irele-Ekiti, aimed squarely at ending farmer-herder conflicts and boosting food security.
Agriculture and Food Security Commissioner Ebenezer Boluwade confirmed the state has approved the land for the project, calling it a key plank of Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s push to make Ekiti investor-friendly for agribusiness.
“This ranching project, when completed, will enhance modern livestock production, create employment opportunities for youths and residents of the host community, and stimulate local economic growth through corporate social responsibility initiatives,” Boluwade said.
The ranch is designed to replace wandering herds with structure. Plans include grazing paddocks and cultivated pastures, grasses and legumes, hay and silage production, and the rearing of hybrid and exotic cattle breeds for meat. The goal: fewer clashes, more beef.
Compensation has already started flowing. The company is paying residents affected by the project, with full operations set to begin soon. Presenting cheques in Irele, Chairman Ranti Omole pledged more than ranching. The firm will launch a revolving loan scheme for market women in the area, tying the project to grassroots commerce.
To lock in standards, a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding has been signed by the state government, the company, and the host community. The MoU sets operational guidelines and compliance benchmarks for the ranch.

Traditional rulers are backing it. The Onirele of Irele-Ekiti, Oba Andero David, and the Onirele-in-Council welcomed the move, saying the project promises “significant development” for the community. The monarch praised both the government and investors, assuring them of the community’s full support.
For Ekiti, the message is clear: ranches over roaming, jobs over conflict, and meat on the table without blood on the farms.
