There is mounting disquiet in the Ekiti chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) over the resignation of ex-Governor Segun Oni from the party, The Nation can report.
It was gathered PDP leaders at the state and national level made last-minute spirited efforts to dissuade the former Governor from leaving.
It was learnt that Oni rebuffed entreaties by the Senator Iyorcha Ayu-led National Working Committee of PDP and snubbed former Governor Ayo Fayose who visited his Ifaki-Ekiti country home.
Oni’s decision to resign from the PDP was after he lost the January 26 governorship primary to Otunba Bisi Kolawole, Fayose’s anointed aspirant.
The ex-Governor has however not indicated the party he would be pitching tent with.
Speculations are rife that the ex-Governor may join All Progressives Grand Alliance(APGA) to contest the governorship poll.
Impeccable sources within Fayose’s camp told The Nation our correspondent that the development has destabilised the party and halted the ongoing mobilisation for its candidate.
“My friend, I won’t deceive you the exit of Engr. Segun Oni is causing an uneasy calm in the party.
“To this end, the party has summoned an emergency meeting of stakeholders for Monday to reflect on the current situation and take urgent steps to forstall mass exodus,” one of them said. (The Nation)
