The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has commenced investigations into a suspected oil theft case involving one barge, two trucks, and a suspect handed over by the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Delta.
The handover took place in Warri on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, following the interception of the suspect and equipment by naval personnel.
Lieutenant Commander E.O. Adeola, who represented the Commander of NNS Delta during the handover, disclosed that the suspect, identified as Samson Uki, was apprehended at the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) Jetty.
Uki was reportedly caught transferring products, suspected to be crude oil, from Barge Oghenekome into two trucks. Adeola further noted that preliminary investigations revealed the operation was being conducted without the requisite legal permits, raising serious concerns about its legality.
The EFCC, represented at the handover by Assistant Superintendent Usman Abdullahi Nuhu, assured the public of a detailed investigation into the matter. “We will ensure a comprehensive investigation is conducted, and appropriate legal actions, including prosecution, will follow if the evidence supports wrongdoing,” Nuhu stated.
Oil theft remains a significant challenge in Nigeria, threatening the nation’s economy and contributing to environmental degradation. This interception by the Nigerian Navy highlights ongoing efforts by security agencies to tackle illicit activities in the oil and gas sector. The EFCC has reiterated its commitment to prosecuting offenders to deter similar crimes and uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s natural resources.
The case adds to the growing number of investigations by the EFCC in collaboration with other agencies to address oil-related crimes. Authorities urge citizens to report suspicious activities to ensure continued vigilance against economic sabotage.
