Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, has reacted to the Thursday breach of public peace, law, and order within the Benin metropolis.
The breach followed the Federal High Court’s judgement in Abuja on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, which faulted the impeachment of former Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu.
In response, through the Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Osa Nehikhare at a press conference in Benin, the State Government said it had filed a notice of appeal and a stay of execution on the judgement.
He said these were communicated to the relevant authorities, including the Police.
He said this legal action meant maintaining the status quo, keeping Shaibu impeached as Deputy Governor until the Appeal Court’s decision.
Nehikhare said despite the stay of execution, Shaibu mobilized armed thugs at the airport, causing mayhem as he returned to Benin, in blatant disregard for law and order.
The Commissioner of Police, armed with the stay of execution notice, attempted to deter Shaibu from marching to the Edo State Government House.
Shaibu ignored this, leading to thugs wreaking havoc in the city, resulting in property destruction, injuries, and the death of a policeman.
He condemned the violence, expressing condolences to the police and the fallen officer’s family.
He also criticized Shaibu’s actions, suggesting they aimed to create unrest for political gains.
He urged the Federal Government and the Inspector General of Police to investigate the incident thoroughly.
Commissioner Nehikhare reassured the public of the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order and protecting lives and property in the state.
