Residents of Uma, also known as Imoga, in Akoko Edo Local Government Area of Edo State have raised the alarm over worsening insecurity, accusing armed herders and criminal gangs of persistent kidnappings, ransom-taking, and violent attacks in their forests.

In a petition to Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North, the Umakhafe Steering Committee described the situation as “dire and unbearable,” warning that continued inaction could push frustrated youths toward self-help.

The community said criminal activities linked to illegal herders and kidnappers have persisted since 2016 and worsened in recent years.

“Our community forests at all the cardinal points have become the dens of kidnappers, ransom taking and illegal herders’ settlement camps whose mindless open grazing activities have unleashed untold ruins, assaults and tragedies on our people,” the petition stated.

Residents cited several incidents, including the abduction of two brothers in November 2025 and the kidnapping of eight people along the Ibillo-Imoga Road in January 2026. The group said a N20 million ransom was paid before the victims were released after two weeks. Another attempted abduction allegedly occurred a day after their release.

The petition also referenced the April 19, 2026 kidnapping of a cattle buyer, during which one suspect was arrested after the victim escaped. Following the incident, youths reportedly mobilised to evacuate more than 20 herder camps from parts of the forest without violence.

The community said some camps allegedly occupied by armed elements remain in the western axis of the forest and pose an ongoing threat.

It urged Oshiomhole to facilitate the deployment of anti-kidnapping squads, ensure prosecution of arrested suspects, and establish additional security formations. Specific requests include a police station in Imoga, a military checkpoint between Imoga and Okengwen in Kogi State, and increased recruitment of local youths into the Edo Vigilante Network.

The petition was signed by members of the Umakhafe Steering Committee led by Prince Philip Damissah and other community leaders.
