Developing Story: Security men lay siege to Abuja over #FreeNnamdiKanu Protest as chaos breaks out

A security siege has been laid to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), with chaos being reported in parts of the Nigerian capital.

A report by News Express said security agents were seeking to thwart the #FreeNnamdiKanu Protest being organised by founder and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoleye Sowore.

The report cited updates provided on a WhatsApp platform by a freelance journalist, Ugo Okoro and quoted him to have posted“Maitama to Transcorp is under police teargas as we speak. Be cautious. The riot is out. Abuja stand still for Kanu release by Sowore gallantry. He’s a man of valor. A resilient soldier of freedoms, not a mouthy coward.”

“So police are everywhere shooting teargas.

“This is for your safety”.

News Express had early this morning reported that there is tension in Abuja over the planned protest for the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Sowore has been busy mobilising Nigerians, especially traders, to come out in their numbers to protest against the continued detention of Kanu in the custody of the Department of State Service (DSS).

However, the Nigeria Police Force has warned intending protesters agitating for the release of Kanu against any form of protest around the Aso Rock Villa and its environs.

A report by Eagle Online said that operatives of the Nigeria Police Force fired teargas into the air at the Federal Secretariat, Abuja chasing workers, mainly civil servants, back home ahead of the planned protest, tagged: #FreeNnamdiKanuNow.

The protest, spearheaded by the Publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, is to fight for the release of the Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

According to witness reports, many commuters were turned back by the mobile police officers who cordoned all link roads to the Federal Secretariat in Abuja to prevent any protest.

This followed a court order banning any form of protest around the Three Arms Zone made up of the Executive, Judiciary, and Legislature.

The Federal Secretariat is opposite the Three Arms Zone.
