The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has, according to strong feelers, picked Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, as running mate to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, in the 2023 presidential contest.
The PDP choice of Okowa would appear to run contrary to the initial recommendation of Rivers State Governor, Barrister Nyesom Wike, by a Committee set up by the party to screen three nominees and come up with a recommendation.
But a highly-placed source just drew the attention of THE CONCLAVE to the fact that Wike was not solely recommended to the party.
He was said to have been recomnended along with Okowa.
Recall that Wike had reportedly been recommended by the committee having scored 13 votes of the 16 votes of the 16-member committee to set the stage for his further screening and announcement by the National Working Committee of the party on Thursday.
Reports filtering out of Wadata House, the national headquarters of the PDP, have pointed in the direction of Governor Okowa of Delta State, who is a Delta Igbo from the South-South zone.
Reports also said that Okowa had arrived at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secretariat for his screening for the vice-presidential slot to Atiku Abubakar.
Wike also had reportedly arrived at the National secretariat for his screening, a development that is feared may trigger tension and potential discord in the party.
This was even as multiple reports claimed that Atiku and the PDP had finally settled for Okowa and dropping the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, who was earlier recommended by the party’s selection committee.
AIT owned by Raymond Dokpesi, the leader of the technical committee for the Atiku Abubakar presidential campaign, reported that Atiku would announce Okowa as his running mate any moment from now.
The news platform noted that “barring any unforeseen last-minute developments, Governor of Delta State Ifeanyi Okowa is the man to emerge as the party’s Vice Presidential candidate for the 2023 elections.”
