Defence minister flags off enhanced air campaign in Northwest Nigeria

The Honourable Minister of Defence, Dr. Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, visited the Air Component of Operation FANSAN YAMMA in Katsina and Sokoto States on November 18, 2024.

In a statement, Director of Public Relations and Information Nigerian Air Force Air Commodore Olusola F. Akinboyewa said the visit underscored the need for operational readiness and sustained air superiority in combating banditry and insurgency in Northwest Nigeria.

During his visit, Dr. Abubakar officially launched the reinvigorated air campaign under Operation FANSAN YAMMA, marking a significant step toward neutralizing criminal elements and restoring peace to affected communities.

He commended the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) for its dedication and success in air interdiction missions.

“Your bravery and professionalism inspire Nigerians,” the Minister stated.

“We’re witnessing farmers returning to their fields, children back in school, businesses reopening, and citizens sleeping peacefully.”

Dr. Abubakar highlighted the federal government’s commitment under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to strengthen the NAF.

Investments in advanced aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles, and cutting-edge technology have enhanced the force’s operational capabilities.

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, expressed gratitude for the Minister’s support. “Your leadership boosts morale and renews our fighting spirit. The NAF remains resolute in its mission to restore peace and stability, which are essential for Nigeria’s prosperity.”

The visit featured briefings, field inspections, and a fly-past by NAF fighter pilots.

The defence minister lauded the NAF’s innovative use of intelligence and technology in targeting bandit hideouts, reaffirming the critical role of air power in protecting Nigeria’s citizens and territorial integrity.

The engagement served as a morale booster for troops and a renewed commitment to securing peace in the region.
