A senior officer of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Assistant Superintendent of Customs (ASC) Akinyode Mustapha, has been killed in an attack by unknown gunmen following the interception of a vehicle carrying suspected cannabis in Ogun State.

Security sources said the incident occurred after a team from the NCS Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone A, Ikeja, led by DSC Ogundana Oluwademi, seized a Sienna bus loaded with suspected cannabis at about 11:40 p.m. on February 2 at Oke-Agbede, near Imeko.

The driver reportedly fled the scene on foot as officers took custody of the vehicle and the suspected contraband.

While returning to Lagos with the seized vehicle, the Customs team came under attack from unidentified assailants near the Immigration checkpoint at Idofa, Imeko.

During the ambush, Mustapha, 50, was hit by a bullet.

He was rushed to the General Hospital in Ilaro, where he was later confirmed dead.

Security personnel who responded to the incident said no spent ammunition was recovered at the scene, though photographs were taken as part of preliminary investigations.

The officer’s remains were subsequently released to his family for burial, while the seized vehicle had already been moved to the Customs base in Lagos.

Authorities said investigations are ongoing to clarify the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify those responsible.

Further updates are expected as inquiries continue.
