Curtain falls as former Interim Nigerian President, Ernest Shonekan, dies at 85

A former head of the Interim National Government (ING) of Nigeria, Chief Ernest Shonekan is dead.

Shonekan, who succeeded former Military President, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, died in Lagos at the age of 85.

The ING was put in place by the Babangida-led military junta in the aftermath of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election acclaimed to have been won by the late Chief MKO Abiola.

The deceased was the head of ING between August 26 and November 17, 1993 after Babangida stepped aside.

He was ousted three months later in a palace coup led by the late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha.

Shonekan, who hailed from Ogun State, was a lawyer by profession and also served in many companies.

He was onetime Chairman and Managing Director of the United Africa Company (UAC).
