An FCT High Court has remanded a 40-year-old University of Abuja law student, Monday Goodluck, in Kuje Correctional Centre for allegations that he raped a 100-level Medicine and Surgery student.

Justice M.S. Idris ordered the remand on Wednesday after rejecting an oral bail application from defence counsel Samson Francis. The judge directed that a written bail application be filed and served on the prosecution, and adjourned the case to June 9 for further hearing.

Goodluck was arraigned by police on two counts of rape and causing physical injury. Prosecution counsel Alexander Agbo told the court the defendant allegedly assaulted the student at his residence around 11 p.m. on March 25 after luring her with a false claim about securing a NELFUND loan.

The prosecution also alleged that Goodluck caused physical injury and attempted to silence the victim by shoving his fingers into her mouth.

The offences are listed under Sections 1 and 2 of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2015. Goodluck pleaded not guilty.
