Court remands businessman charged with duping associate of N1.9m

A Jimeta Area Court in Yola, on Friday ordered the remand of a 46-year-old businessman, Abubakar Mohammed, alleged to have defrauded a business associate of N1.9million.

The trial Judge, Al’ Amin Diya ordered that Mohammed of Jimeta town, Yola, who pleaded guilty to the charge of criminal breach of trust and cheating should beremanded at the correctional centre.

Diya subsequently adjourned the case until March 19, for review of facts and sentencing.

“Meanwhile the defendant is hereby remanded at the correctional center,” the judge stated.

Earlier, a direct criminal complaint was filed on March 12 by the complainant and business partner to the defendant, Malam Dan Azumi of Yola town.

Azumi claimed that he and the defendant had been in agricultural business for over three years.

He said that he invested N1.9 million in the business for purchase of agricultural produce and there after, Mohammed absconded to an unknown location.

The complainant said that he subsequently reported the matter to executives of their association, who summoned Mohammed, and when he appeared, promised to pay the money after two months.

He said the defendant breached all the agreements made, adding that all effort to recover the money or the goods had proved futile.

The court held that the offence committed amounted to criminal breach of trust and cheating contrary to Sections 60 and 312 of the Penal Code, Law of Adamawa State 2018.

The complainants urged the court to take cognisance of the crime and punish the defendant accordingly.
