A Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned till Friday, October 24, to enable Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to begin his defence.
This development followed Kanu’s dramatic decision to sack his legal team, led by Kanu Agabi, SAN.
When the case was called, Agabi announced the withdrawal of his team, citing Kanu’s decision to take over the case.
Kanu confirmed this, telling the court he was willing and ready to conduct his case himself.
Justice James Omotosho ordered other members of the defendant’s legal team to vacate the courtroom and asked Kanu to open his case.
Kanu began by arguing that the court lacked jurisdiction to further conduct his trial.
However, Justice Omotosho overruled him, insisting that he proceed with his defence.
Following this, one of Kanu’s former lawyers, Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN, intervened, requesting an adjournment to allow Kanu gather his thoughts.
The court adjourned till Friday, October 24, to enable Kanu to open his defence.
Kanu has listed 23 witnesses, including prominent Nigerian figures such as Nyesom Wike, Dave Umahi, Theophilus Danjuma, Tukur Buratai, and Hope Uzodinma, to testify in his defence.
