COP28: Nigeria, other stakeholders commit to implementation of climate actions for economic growth and development

Key players, who converged on Nigeria’s Pavilion in Dubai on Monday during a side event, at the ongoing COP28, have underscored their commitment to playing critical roles at ensuring effective management of the economy through the implementation of the various climate actions and commitments, and to ensure that the actions impact positively on growth and development of the economy through effective planning and budgeting.

The theme of the side event was: “Mainstreaming Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) into development planning and budgeting.”

THE CONCLAVE reports that key issues of mainstreaming NDCs into development planning and budgeting within their respective areas of focus, but with emphasis on resource mobilisation for climate financing for both mitigation and adaptation in the planning and Budgeting process, dominated discussions at the event.

The Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning hosted the side event, which was well attended by delegates from both Nigeria, outside Nigeria and other interested parties.

Information at the disposal of this newspaper said that the event, which was anchored by the DG National Council on Climate, Dr Salisu Dahiru and Director Social Development, Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, Dr Sanjo Faniran, had a panel session which comprised the Director, Climate Change at the Federal Ministry of Environment, Dr Inabong Abiola Awe, the Chairman, NESG. Mr. Yusuf Olaniyi, CEO of the NDC Partnership, Dr. Vieira Pablo represented by Ms Mariana, the Hon Commissioner for Budget, Economic Planning, Research Monitoring and Evaluation in Ebonyi State, Mrs Chinwe Okah and Dr Villi Carucci of the World Food Programme.

The Panelist dwelled on the roles of Government, Private Sector, the Sub National Governments. International Non Government Organizations and the Development Partners in innovative approaches towards the mainstreaming process.

Chairman of the National Population Commission, Hon Isa Kwarra and the SSA SDGs, Princess Oorelope Adefulure both reiterated the critical roles of all actors at ensuring effective planning and budgeting for Climate adaptation and mitigation.

The session laid emphasis on the need for aggressive resource mobilization to ensure the attainment of Zero Carbon Emission at the targeted time lines.

Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Budget and Economic Planning Mr. Nebeolisa ,Anako, gave an opening Statement in which he urged the key players in the mainstreaming process to have all hands on deck to ensure that Climate Change programmes and projects were given topmost priorities in the nation’s planning and budgetary strategies.

Anako closed the 45-minute event by thanking all invitees for their active participation, saying he looked forward to closer collaboration in the future.
