China, Nigeria commend their longstanding bilateral relations

The People’s Republic of China and the Federal Republic of Nigeria have released a comprehensive joint statement following the successful conclusion of their first Plenary Session of the China-Nigeria Intergovernmental Committee.

The session was co-chaired by H.E. Wang Yi, Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Minister of Foreign Affairs of China, and H.E. Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria.

The statement underscores the longstanding bilateral relations between China and Nigeria, spanning more than 50 years, and highlights the resilience and robustness of these ties amid evolving international dynamics.

Both sides reviewed past achievements and charted a course for future development, emphasizing mutual trust in political and diplomatic affairs, beneficial cooperation, and support in international arenas.

Key agreements from the session include Nigeria’s reaffirmation of the One China policy, recognizing Taiwan as an integral part of China and opposing any form of “Taiwan independence” and external interference in China’s internal affairs. Nigeria also pledged support for China’s efforts towards national reunification.

Acknowledging Nigeria’s pivotal role in West Africa, both countries committed to enhancing regional stability, particularly in the Sahel, through collaborative efforts in governance, security, and economic development. China commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership in ECOWAS and his efforts to promote regional stability.

Economic cooperation featured prominently, with commitments to infrastructure development, sectoral partnerships, and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). China expressed readiness to increase imports of Nigerian agricultural products and explore opportunities in mining and manufacturing sectors in Nigeria.

Cultural exchanges and mutual understanding were highlighted, with plans to strengthen ties through events like the Chinese-Nigeria Culture Week and cooperative ventures in film, art, and tourism.

Both nations affirmed their dedication to upholding the UN-centered international system, advocating for multipolarity, economic globalization, and a community with a shared future for humanity. They also pledged to maintain close communication and collaboration at all levels to advance bilateral interests.

The next Plenary Session of the China-Nigeria Intergovernmental Committee and its sub-committees are scheduled to convene regularly to further deepen cooperation across various sectors.
