President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday congratulated Kamarudeen Usman on the successful defence of his Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight title with an emphatic win over Jorge Masvidal.
The President, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, described the boxer as the first African-born, Nigerian UFC Champion and courageous fighter.
He commended him for finishing strong inside the octagon, proudly flying the green and white colours in distant lands, and reminding the world that good things and great people still come out of Nigeria.
Adesina said while the global COVID-19 pandemic might have brought gloom to many families and nations, the President was delighted and gratified that the welterweight champion had lifted the spirits with another professional performance proving that things would surely get better at the fullness of time “when we remain committed to the vision.”
Adesina further conveyed the President’s wishes to Usman, saying his best had yet to come in his boxing career.
The President prayed that he would garner more victories in his career and that like fine wine, he would improvewith age.
