Now, the road to the legendary stadium will be named after the Brazilian icon.
Pele had been moved to palliative care earlier in December when his body had stopped responding to initial cancer treatment.
President Jair Bolsonaro declared three days of national mourning in Brazil following Pele’s death.
Now, Rio de Janeiro’s mayor announces the decision to tribute the icon by changing the name of the Avenida Radial Oeste to Avenida Pele. Eduardo Paes wrote on Twitter: “The Avenida Radial Oeste that surrounds Maracanã will be renamed Avenida Pelé tomorrow! The decree will be published in tomorrow’s Official Gazette!”
During his international career, Pele won three World Cups – in 1958, 1962, and 1970. He is the only player to have won the World Cup three times.
Pele scored 757 goals in 831 games in his 20-year career from 1957 to 1977 although Santos claims his tally was closer to 1,000. (Sportsmob)
