Two suspected scrap metal scavengers have died after an explosion under a large drainage channel on Nekede Old Road in Owerri West LGA, Imo State.
The incident occurred about 9:15 p.m. on Thursday, June 26, 2026, according to a statement by Imo Police spokesperson, Henry Okoye

Okoye identified the deceased as Hyginus Akalonu, 32, from Umulumu in Ehime Mbano LGA of Imo, and Victor Egwu, 22, from Agba Ishielu in Ebonyi State.
