BISHOP HASSAN KUKAH @ 70: A TRIBUTE, By Chuks Akamadu

My first acquaintance with you as a thinker and scholar of note was when I had the privilege of stumbling on some of your published essays in the 90s by The Guardian.

I was to later read a few of your books and actively followed your activities as the head of Catholic Secretariat in Nigeria, and I dare say that the body of intellectual works you churned in that capacity help to shape, substantially, my socio-political and economic thoughts. I am eternally indebted you, Fr.

You’re one of Nigeria’s brightest of all times – and this isn’t in the realm of debate. As a scholar, who I see in you is Prof. Ali Mazrui; as a social engineer and moral force, you remind me of the trio of Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther king Jr and Bishop Desmond Tutu; and as a priest, you share some rate dignity with Pope John Paul II.

Unfortunately, any attempt to describe you, in full, would inadvertently lead to doing a book in volumes.

Suffice it therefore to say that I wish to join all well-meaning Nigerians and true friends of Nigeria the world-over to wish you happy 70th birthday celebrations and many more years (if Christ tarries) in good health.

For many, you personify the ideal society that our hearts see and legitimately desire.

Congratulations, Fr!
