Today is not just anybody’s birthday, but that of the extraordinarily talented medical practitioner and internationally accomplished medical diplomat from Benin City in Nigeria. Dr. Osahon Enabulele is the leader of the World Medical Association which is made up of about 116 constituent members and charged with the duty of setting ethical guidelines for medical experimentation on humans for the good of mankind. This is an uncommon achievement anywhere in the world. Every Nigerian should be proud of Dr. Enabulele’s trajectory so far. It underscores the point so often made that Nigerians are amongst those with the highest quality of DNAs and IQ around the globe. They are quick to soar once given the right environment to flourish. The numerous success stories of the likes of Dr. Enabulele outside the shores of nigeria are in contradistinction with the woeful failure demonstrated in the political and economic administration of the Nigerian nation by those who have captured State power for the good of themselves alone.
From what we now know, William Shakespeare’s postulation of many years standing that the fault is not in our stars, but in us remains valid. Our problem is not religion. It’s not our tribes. It’s not our geographical space. The problem lies in us the people of Nigeria and we have a duty to reawaken our national consciousness and build a new Nigeria that would be respected by the rest of the globe.
Let us begin to appreciate the likes of Dr. Enabulele as role models in our communities. We can do this by naming important institutions or public places of interest after them as a way of encouraging others to tow their path of honour. This is an ancient method of rewarding excellence and challenging others to do their best for society. As far back as the reign of Oba Ozolua (1483-1504), there was a great magician and native doctor in Ishan area of Edo State . He was engaged in native medical service across many communities. He was invited to Benin by Oba Ozolua and lodged in a house near the present Oba’s Palace. According to the Anthology of Benin History published by the Benin Monarchy and published in 2018, Okpota performed great deeds for Oba Ozolua and the place where the entrance to his compound used to be was called URHO-OKPOTA in appreciation of his great work. It is my hope that Dr. Enabulele would someday enjoy such an honour from the Nigeria nation and Edo State in particular on account of his invaluable contribution to medical practice world wide.
On the occasion of his birthday, I wish him longevity in good health, greater medical accomplishment and overall happiness in his sojourn on earth. Once again, happy birthday to you my dear brother. YOU ARE LIKE A DIAMOND FROM THE SKY.
