Bingham University, Karu, Nasarawa State has banned the use of smartphones by students on campus, thus redefining the hitherto seemingly chaotic and highly unregulated telecommunication and interactions space.
The students, who were used to wasting precious times on their phones either chatting away on WhatsApp or browsing all manner of stuff that did not add value to their studies, are by the decision of the school management, denied access to that unproductive indulgence.
They are now expected to carry on them analogue phones to make and receive calls as well as send and receive sms or text messages.
THE CONCLAVE reports that the authorities have arranged for Internet broadband in the school which the students can connect to with their tablets or laptops to do their class assignments and other course requirements that would need internet support.
In an internal memo, from the Registrar of the school, with reference: BHU/R/CIR/038/Vol.11, dated 14th March 2023, the institution re-emphasised the ban on the use of smart phones by students within the schools.
The memo reads: “I write to inform you that management at its 147th regular meeting held on Tuesday 17th January 2023 placed ban on the use of smart phones by students in the university. This has been communicated to all students.
“It is our collective responsibility to enforce the ban.
“Accordingly, all members of staff are to ensure compliance.”
The letter was copied Vice Chancellor; Dean, Students’ Affairs; Director, Public Affairs; Chairman, Committee on Ban of Smart Phones; Notice Board.
It was signed by Adze U. Yohamna, Senior Executive Officer 1, Establishment, for the Registrar.
